Translation

My father helped me to translate the lyrics of Arirang. I did this mostly for me, but I thought some of you might be interested in what he had to say:

There are many versions (some say 6) and about 36,000 variations of Arirang. The version I know is probably Kyunggi Version or Seoul Version.

Arirang is a Korean Intangible Cultural Heritage and was successfully submitted as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage twice, in 2012 by South Korea and 2014 by North Korea. It represents love, separation, and deep sorrow with accumulated anger (한)*. The one below should be close to the UNESCO version, but I am not sure. Arirang is normally accompanied by music and instrument accompaniment.

(Refrain)

아리랑, 아리랑, 아라리요

아리랑 고개를 넘어간다

Arirang, arirang, ararıyo. (Non-sensical, no precise meaning)

(You are) Going over Arirang Hill (pass).

(Main)

나를 버리고 가시는 님은

십리도 못가서 발병난다

My lover (heart, dear) who is leaving me (if you abandon me)

Won’t be able to go 10 li (3.1 miles) before you get sore feet.

(Refrain)

(Second)

청천 하늘엔 별들도 (잔별도) 많고

우리네 살림살이 (가슴엔) 한 (희망)도 많다.

Just as many stars (some version: small stars) in the blue sky.

Our lives 살림살이 (some version: 가슴 heart) have many 한’s. (Some version: hope 희망)

*한: very difficult to translate. Deep sorrow with accumulated anger, regret, resentment.
